    Why This Matters

The death of a retired senior military officer at the hands of bandits has renewed concerns about the scale of insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest region. Security experts say the incident highlights the need for stronger anti-banditry strategies and broader reforms to address kidnapping, terrorism, and organized criminal activity across the country.

The death of General Rabe Abubakar is not merely a headline. It underscores the difficulties facing a system struggling to guarantee the safety of citizens. Kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism have become painful realities for many Nigerians,” the group stated.

The group expressed concern over the persistent spread of insecurity nationwide and urged Nigerians to avoid viewing security challenges through ethnic, regional, or political lenses.

According to them, terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping are national threats that require a coordinated response involving government agencies, security institutions, community leaders, and citizens.

They emphasized that lasting solutions would require reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence gathering, improving operational coordination among security agencies, enhancing community engagement, and addressing the root causes of violent crime.

The retired officers concluded by calling on authorities at all levels to intensify efforts to protect citizens and restore public confidence in the nation’s security system.
