Umahi Reveals Ongoing Efforts by Governors, Political Leaders and Stakeholders
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has disclosed that political leaders across Nigeria’s South-East are actively pursuing political and diplomatic measures aimed at securing the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking during an inspection of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Lagos State, Umahi said governors and stakeholders from the region have remained committed to finding a peaceful resolution to issues surrounding Kanu’s detention while promoting stability across the South-East.
“The governors of the South-East are doing everything possible, and we are supporting them in ensuring a peaceful South-East while also exploring political ways of helping our brother, Nnamdi Kanu,” Umahi stated.
Umahi’s comments reflect a growing and coordinated campaign by influential South-East leaders who have repeatedly appealed to the Federal Government for a political solution to Kanu’s case.
In recent months, governors from the five South-East states, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, religious leaders and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have intensified consultations aimed at securing Kanu’s freedom through dialogue and constitutional processes.
Many of the leaders believe that resolving Kanu’s case could contribute significantly to restoring peace, reducing tensions and accelerating economic recovery across the region.
Senate Caucus and Lawmakers Sustain Pressure
The South-East Caucus in the Senate has consistently urged President Bola Tinubu to consider a political settlement, arguing that Kanu’s continued detention remains a major concern for many people in the region.
Federal lawmakers from the South-East, led by representatives including Obi Aguocha, have also undertaken consultations with national leaders and key stakeholders in pursuit of Kanu’s release. The lawmakers have repeatedly maintained that dialogue remains the most effective pathway to a lasting solution. Their efforts have included meetings with political leaders across party lines and appeals for presidential intervention.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Backs Dialogue
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has remained one of the strongest advocates for Kanu’s release, consistently urging the Federal Government to embrace political engagement rather than prolonged legal battles.
The organisation has encouraged South-East governors, ministers, lawmakers and traditional institutions to maintain a united front in discussions with Abuja, insisting that peaceful negotiations offer the best opportunity for progress.
Several Ohanaeze leaders have publicly expressed confidence that sustained engagement with the Presidency could eventually produce a favourable outcome.
