A fresh dispute involving the Nigeria Police Force and a detainee is raising a bigger question about the state of rule of law in Nigeria.
A lawyer says the police have continued holding Godwin Francis Akpan despite an FCT High Court order dated September 17, 2026, directing his release.
The lawyer has now appealed to IGP OlatunjiDisu for intervention.
The immediate issue is Akpan’s detention. But the bigger issue is institutional: if a court orders the state to release a citizen, who ensures that the state obeys?
The lawyer says Akpan is not seeking immunity from investigation and remains willing to cooperate with lawful inquiries.
The case now puts judicial authority, police powers and the credibility of Nigeria’s rule-of-law system under renewed scrutiny.
