Promises Stronger Military and Local Defence Production

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a renewed, technology-driven offensive against terrorism, banditry and other security threats, pledging to equip Nigeria’s Armed Forces with advanced military technology, intelligence-led capabilities and locally manufactured defence equipment.

The President made the declaration on Monday during the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) and the maiden African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said his administration was determined to modernise the Armed Forces and strengthen their capacity to confront evolving security challenges.

“Our administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” the President said.

    Focus on Technology and Intelligence

Tinubu said the Federal Government is investing significantly in modern military hardware, advanced intelligence systems and troop training to ensure Nigerian security forces remain ahead of insurgents, terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups.

He noted that research, innovation and indigenous defence production have become central pillars of his administration’s security agenda as Nigeria seeks greater self-reliance in military capability.

DICON Revival to Boost Local Defence Manufacturing

A major highlight of the President’s address was his commitment to revitalising the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), describing it as critical to reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported military equipment.

According to Tinubu, previous administrations made efforts to revive the corporation, but his government is determined to transform DICON into a strategic defence manufacturing hub capable of producing military hardware locally, creating skilled jobs and strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture.

    Strengthening African Military Cooperation

The President also described the African Land Forces Forum as an important platform for promoting regional military cooperation, defence diplomacy and knowledge sharing among African armies.

He praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and sacrifices in protecting the country’s territorial integrity and combating insecurity across multiple theatres of operation.

“Their devotion to neutralising threats extends beyond our borders. It becomes a real contribution to global security, peace and stability,” Tinubu stated.

    Tribute to Fallen Heroes

Paying tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in service, the President assured Nigerians that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

“Their sacrifices will not be in vain, and their families will not be forgotten. Their courage lives in the freedom we breathe, and the families they left behind remain a sacred responsibility of this nation,” he said.

    Commendation for Army Leadership

Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his leadership and also praised the organisers of the maiden joint Nigerian Army Day Celebration and African Land Forces Forum for advancing defence cooperation, innovation and strategic dialogue across Africa.
